CHANGE OF THE GASTRIC SECRETORY FUNCTION OF ALBINO RAT EXPOSED TO CHRONIC HYPOXIA

Abstract
Various causative factors have been considered why the incidence of- peptic ulcer among air-crew is higher than general population. Chronic hypoxia might be possible to be one of the f actors. This report was intended to investigate any effects of chronic hypoxia (eight weeks) to the gastric secretory function of Albino rat. The experimental rat was confirmed to be exposed to chronic hypoxia definitely, with information of hematologic changes that is classic picture due to hypoxia; which were roughly proportional to duration of exposure to hypoxia.
Results obtained are as follows:
1. The increase of RBC, Hb and Hct was proportional to the length of exposure to hypoxia
2. There was not any significant change of gastric acidity among the various groups.
3. Peptic activity was increased after 4 weeks hypoxia exposure, and returned to normal after 8 weeks.
4. The gastric secretory function of the rat exposed to chronic hypoxia changed along with the histological pictures, that were dilatations of the secretory cnaculi of the stomach mucosa. The amount of the secretion decreased at the second week slightly and markedly at fourth week but returned gradually to the normal level at the eighth week, but change of results was not statistically significant.
However, it was thought to be needed further study to explain any definite relationship between the gastric secretion and chronic hypoxia.
